Federal Information Minister Sherry Rehman said that women rights will be protected by PPP government and the prime minister has made it clear to the cabinet that laws pertaining to human rights should be enforced at all costs.
The Prime Minister was explicit in his instructions to the new cabinet that they must start taking seriously the challenges faced by nation regarding enforcement of human rights, including those of minorities and women, says a statement issued here on Tuesday. The PPP manifesto was circulated among the cabinet members and it was made clear that women rights will be given as indicated by the unanimous support to the sexual harassment bill moved by PPP.
In fact the prime minister suggested that domestic worker's rights should also be brought under domestic violence bill waiting discussion by the Standing Committee, it added. She also said that arrests are being made in the scandalous Balochistan cases of honour killing recently, which she is personally following with the authorities.
She said that PM himself will soon hold a meeting with women activists and stakeholders to chart a way forward for any future legislation, the statement added. Giving a high priority to women's issues is not enough, she said, adding that a framework for effective implementation is critical to legislative efforts of the government.
Commenting on the Bill on 'Protection from Harassment at Workplace', approved by the Cabinet last week, she said that any given legislation requires a distinct set of practical actions for enforcement. She said that the legislation on Sexual Harassment at Workplace would make a positive impact on the future structure of the country's labour force.
Terming the proposed Sexual Harassment Legislation as a success of the people, Sherry said that civil society played an instrumental role in the drafting process, making the legislation an example of government-civil society collaboration. Following this success, our government would continue to work for creating an enabling environment for an inclusive legislation, formulation and implementation structure, she said.-PR
