Bullish sentiment was seen on the interbank market on Thursday following the announcement of raise in the discount rate to bring stability in economic fundamentals, money experts said. The rupee gained 15 paisa in relation to dollar for buying at 80.40 and it also dropped by 10 paisa for selling at 80.50 in process of trading, they said.
In the fourth Asian trading yen retreated from a two-week high against euro as short-term players locked in profits. But yen retained its overall strength as investors remained risk averse and favoured the perceived safety of the Japanese currency amid fears of a global recession.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee, however, lost 65 paisa versus dollar for buying and selling at 79.50 and 80.50, they said. The rupee also shed 70 paisa against euro for buying and selling at Rs 99.00 and 100.00, they said.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The Pak rupee failed to maintain its position and declined by 30 paisa on buying side while it remained unchanged against selling the US dollar in the kerb market on Thursday.
At the end of trading, the dollar's buying rate closed higher at Rs 79.80 against the overnight closing of Rs 79.50.
However, the rupee showed strength and appreciated its value against the pound sterling. The pound was purchased and sold at Rs 121.00 and Rs 125.00 as compared to Wednesday closing of Rs 123.50 and Rs 127.00, respectively.
RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The rupee-dollar parity remained unchanged at the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Thursday. The dollar opened at Rs 79 (buying) and Rs 80 (selling) same as last day's closing rate. It did not observe any change in the second session and closed at Rs 79 (buying) and Rs 80 (selling). Pound Sterling opened at Rs 118 (buying) and Rs 120 (selling) against overnight rate of Rs 120 (buying) and Rs 122 (selling). It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 118 (buying) and Rs 120 (selling).
