Police shot and killed a knife-wielding man who wounded three people and took a nurse hostage in a Carrefour store in south-west China on Saturday, the official Xinhua news agency said. The 39-year-old man, identified as Lu Zhiwen, had apparently been disappointed in a love affair. He threatened to kill the nurse if his girlfriend did not go to the store to see him, a police spokesman was quoted as saying.
Lu attacked customers and took one person hostage in an outlet of the French retail giant in the city of Kunming. When a female nurse was sent inside to treat the injured, he took her hostage and released the other person he was holding. Police killed Lu, who had an unspecified criminal record, after a four-hour stand-off, Xinhua reported. The nurse was rescued unharmed.
