Sharp recovery was seen on the interbank market on Friday as the rupee gained 55 paisa against dollar for buying and selling at 79.30 and 79.40, dealers said. The rupee was able to show its muscles on the back of slight increase in supply of dollars, they said.
Amid final session yen held firm against major currencies lingering concerns about the global banking sector and economic fears. Trade was subdued and investors appeared mainly to be adjusting positions given few major economic events ahead of the weekend and the Chinese New Year holidays next week.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee tracked the interbank gain, rising 50 paisa against dollar for buying at 79.50 and it was also up by 60 paisa for selling at 79.70, they said. The rupee was sharply higher against euro for buying and selling at 102.80 and Rs 104.00, they said.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The Pak rupee gained 50 paisa on buying side while it was unchanged on the selling side in relation to dollar on Lahore currency market on Friday. According to dealers, the dollar on increasing supply declined to Rs 79.30 from overnight Rs 79.80. However, its selling rate remained intact at Rs 80.30. Similarly, the rupee appreciated against pound sterling,which closed at Rs 113.00 and Rs 115.00 on buying and selling counters as compared to Thursday's Rs 114.00 and Rs 116.00, respectively.
RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The rupee remained firm against dollar at the currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Friday. The dollar opened at Rs 79.40 (buying) and Rs 79.50 (selling) against last rate of Rs 79.80 (buying). It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 79.40 (buying) and Rs 79.50 (selling). Pound sterling opened at Rs 118 (buying) and Rs 118.50 (selling) against same last rate. It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 117 (buying) and Rs 118 (selling).
