Firm trend was seen on the currency market on Monday as the rupee gained modestly in process of trading, dealers said. On the interbank market the rupee gained five paisa in relation to dollar for buying and selling at 79.80 and 79.85, they said.
The rupee touched the low level at 80.20 versus the dollar due to highest demand for the US currency by the importers, they added. In the first Asian trading dollar slipped against euro and yen as investor aversion towards risk eased slightly on a report that Citigroup was in talks that could see the US government take a large chunk of the struggling lender's common stock.
OPEN MARKET RATES: More or less same condition was witnessed on the open market as the rupee looked ahead with an appreciation of five paisa in terms of dollar for buying and selling at 79.70 and 80.00, they said. The rupee, however, failed to come out of the weak spell in relation to euro, losing Re.1 for buying and selling at Rs 102.50 and Rs 104.50, they said.
