Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, while on a scheduled visit to the Commerce Ministry on Wednesday, reportedly stated "there is law but no justice in this country." according to one of the officials present at the meeting.
When the verdict of the Supreme Court in disqualification case of Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) chief Mian Muhamamd Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif, was conveyed by an officer of Special Branch in the Commerce Ministry to the Prime Minister's ADC on the wireless, he reportedly responded that the Prime Minister was expecting such a decision.
However, another official, who was sitting close to the Prime Minister, confided to this scribe that when Prime Minister Gilani was apprised about the Supreme Court verdict, his expression completely changed, and he visibly lost interest in the presentation. He appeared preoccupied. However, at this point when some Commerce Ministry officials complained that the Ministry of Law and Justice had not cleared some of their files, his impromptu comment was that "there is law but no justice in Pakistan."
The sources said the Prime Minister, who also brought his own team of officials from the Prime Minister's Secretariat, concluded the meeting minutes after the verdict was announced by the apex court. On February 23, Prime Minister Gilani assured former Punjab Chief Minister and President of PML (N) Mian Shahbaz Sharif that the Federal government would not destabilise the provincial government.
The Prime Minister soon after the meeting he went to the office of Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim and spent some time with him. Sources claimed that the two men appeared concerned about the situation. The sources said the Prime Minister left the Ministry in a hurry and he barely shook hands with one from many officials present there.
