Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), on Friday warned the political forces that media can be the first casualty if democracy is derailed in the wake of the Supreme Court judgement against Sharif brothers and appealed democratic forces to show political maturity at this crucial juncture.
"We have come a long way to achieve whatever freedom of the Press there is in the country but media can be the first casualty if democracy derails," PFUJ said in a statement.
The nation can not afford another attack on the media and though PFUJ will resist any such move, it expects political maturity from the political forces for which the ruling coalition must take the lead by lifting governor's rule on Punjab, allow popular leaders to play role in politics and implement Charter of Democracy. "Journalists of this country have given a lot of sacrifices for the freedom of the Press."
The statement issued by PFUJ Secretary General Mazhar Abbas said: "We should not lose this opportunity of moving forward and we appeal to all the democratic forces to show political maturity at this crucial juncture," it added.
Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists from the day one supported independence of judiciary, condemned March 9, 2007 action against the deposed chief justice of Pakistan. The journalists confronted the then ruler Pervez Musharraf's November 3, 2007 emergency and ban on media. "It is now time to protect this freedom from any future danger and the only way is the continuation of democratic process," PFUJ said.-PR
