The Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Noman Bashir has clarified that there are no differences between Pakistan Navy and the Interior Ministry with regard to the report about the Ajmal Kasab case. He was talking to reporters after the launching of the second indigenously constructed Small Tanker-cum-Utility Ship (STUS) at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW) here on Saturday.
Referring to his press talk on Friday on the occasion of announcement regarding the Exercise Aman 2009 commencing from March 5, he said that he can only speak as the Naval Chief and that he is not the government spokesman. Admiral Noman said that Ajmal Kasab case is not being investigated by the Pakistan Navy and as such he has no knowledge about this.
The Interior Ministry is investigating this case and that we at Pakistan Navy have no differences with the Interior Ministry regarding their report in connection with such a case. He said that he saw reports in today's newspapers in which an impression was given as if what he had said yesterday was in contradiction with what was the stance of the government.
The CNS said that whatever he had said was as the Naval Chief and made it clear that he has a jurisdiction and whatever does not fall in his ambit he cannot comment on. He stated that he had remarked yesterday and is repeating it today that Pakistan has a coastline of 1,000 miles and there are a number of organisations whose duty is to check illegal activity of any sort.
However, Admiral Noman added that there are holes as 1,000 miles coastline cannot be manned everywhere. So any such possibility cannot be denied outrightly. But what I do not know I cannot comment on because this would complicate the situation further.
The Naval Chief said that we are not directly involved in the investigation of this very case which is in the domain of the Ministry of Interior and as such they have more information. He also repeated that we have no differences with the report of
the Interior Ministry with regard to the Ajmal Kasab case. Whatever evidence they have that is right and there is no contradiction either. Admiral Noman said that he had stated yesterday that Pakistan Navy has no evidence but that does not mean that the Ministry of Interior also does not have evidence. He stated that we have no differences or contradictions with the report of Interior Minister as has been mentioned in the reports carried by today's newspapers.
