The Sunday luncheon meeting between the Prime Minister, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and the Pakistan Muslim League leader, Mian Nawaz Sharif at Raiwind subsided the political turmoil that exacerbated the existing polarisation. Former Punjab Minister for Industries, ex-President of MCCI and also the ex-President of APBUMA, Khawaja Muhammad Jalal-uddin Roomi said on Monday.
A major threat to the democratic process was averted, when the two mainstream parties agreed in principle to run the system on the basis of the Charter of Democracy, he said. Talking to newsmen Roomi said that economy would be strengthened in peaceful and congenial atmosphere and this atmosphere would also attract the foreign as well as local investors to establish industries and manufacturing units in Pakistan.
Praising the PM, he, It was good to see Mr Gilani congratulating Nawaz and the people of Pakistan on the role they played in the reinstatement of judges. He said that Gilani brought a message of goodwill from the federation and the President, Zardari. Roomi also eulogised Nawaz whose tone was equally conciliatory and congratulated the PM and President for restoring judiciary to November 2, 2007 status without mincing his words.
Former MCCI president alos said that reports of a meeting between the PM Gilani and PML-N leader Nawaz was a respite following the confrontation between the two major parties. He was of the view that it would require a number of concrete steps on the part of the PPP leadership to deal with the prevailing Punjab crisis.
Roomi further congratulated the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry on resuming his duties and hailed the countrymen, lawyers community, and members of civil society and media personnel for upholding the just cause. He hoped that the PPP led coalition government would continue to work for the rule of law and for building strong democratic institutions.
The lawyers movement for the restoration of the CJ that resulted in the reinstatement of the CJ and other deposed judges, has been a unique phenomenon, he added. The rejuvenation of the judiciary has encouraged the general public to acquire a system free of oppression and inequality, as Pakistans judiciary was never an independent institution mainly due to the fact that the country for the most of the years after independence remained under military rule, he commented.
