The Haripur collection point and cold storage being established by the Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Board (PHDEB) over an area of 4.8 acres in Haripur, is expected to be operational by mid of April. This is one of the four collection points to be constructed by the PHDEB, providing modern facilities of collection, auction and cold storage facilities to the fruit and vegetable traders.
PHDEB arranged an orientation tour of Lahore based journalists to the Haripur fruits and vegetable collection point, where the project co-ordinator Engr. Ansab Amin Chaudhry informed at a briefing that shops and commercial had already been allotted through open auction and construction on this area would start during the current month.
Contractors of the collection Point Ziaullah Niazi and Ulfat Rasool Butt, who were also present on this occasion, announced that they would bear 25 percent of the total expenses of a mosque to be built in this area.
The facilities provided in the Haripur collection point included fruit shed, vegetable shed, auction shed, shops, weigh bridge, market administration office, access roads, water supply and sewerage and support facilities. There is also a plan to construct a cold storage and dehydration plant in the same area to facilitate those wanted to export fruits and vegetables. These two facilities could not be taken up due to shortage of funds but the money acquired from sale of land for shops would be spent on setting up an international cold storage, Ansab said and added that process of setting up this cold storage would start within next two months.
Establishment of wholesale market and cold storage facilities would enhance the pace and volumes of business by providing market place for commercial transactions for the domestic and international trade. With appropriate market infrastructure, the supplies would be regulated by moving supplies from surplus to deficit areas and also by holding surplus in cold store and releasing when there is a need.
