US Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke accompanied by the Chairman of US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Michael Mullen on Tuesday called on Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani.
The Prime Minister while expressing his satisfaction on the continuing parlays between the two sides on every aspect of their multifaceted relations hoped that the US government would take into account his government's concerns about the new US policy towards Pakistan and Afghanistan as enunciated by President Obama on March 27. He thanked the US government for its important role for the success of forthcoming Friends of Democratic Pakistan's ministerial meeting and Donors' Conference in Tokyo.
Ambassador Holbrooke congratulated the Prime Minister for his commendable role in promoting democracy and political reconciliation in the country.
Underlining the importance of Pakistan's political and economic stability and peace and security for the United States, Holbrooke stated that the US government would continue to render all possible assistance to Pakistan for achieving these goals.
Ambassador Holbrooke apprised the Prime Minister in detail about his successful meeting with the Foreign Minister of Pakistan earlier in the day and assured him that he on his return to Washington would bring the views of Pakistan's leadership to the attention of the US authorities. Ambassador Holbrooke assured the Prime Minister that he would make utmost efforts to build trust and remove the misunderstanding between the two countries. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Minister of Defence Ahmed Mukhtar and Advisor for Interior Rehman Malik were also present in the meeting.
