The lawmakers of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) on Tuesday boycotted the proceedings of the National Assembly, apparently protesting against the adoption of the resolution in the National Assembly, endorsing the Nizam-e-Adl regulation. The MQM members on Monday abstained from the voting process to get the resolution passed.
Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani tried his best to motivate MQM parliamentary leader in the NA Dr Farooq Sattar in favour of the government bid to get passed the Sharia Regulation from the Assembly, but failed to do so.
The MQM is much concerned about the mounting militancy of the local Taliban with particular reference to Karachi as its chief Altaf Hussain time and again expressed his apprehension that Taliban are planning to gain control of the economic hub and the largest metropolis of the country, where the MQM enjoys overwhelming public support.
Besides, Tuesday was a private members' day and it was lacklustre day due to thin attendance of the members and their interest. The house took some legislative businesses and it referred as many as eight private members bills to the Standing concerned committees for further discussion. The bills moved include Restriction on Re-employment and Semi-Government Departments and Autonomous Bodies, moved by Anusha Rehman Khan.
Pakistan Baitul Maal (Amendment) Bill 2009, moved by Sheren Arshad Khan, aimed at including members of the parliament in the Pakistan Baitul Maal activities to ensure transparency in disbursement of funds among the deserving people. Anti-terrorism (Amendment) Bill 2009, aiming at providing special compensation to the acid burn victims according to circumstances, was moved by Marvi Memon.
The Rights of Juvenile Offenders Bill 2009, moved by Yasmeen Rehman, demands setting up of special courts to dispose off the cases of under-age children at speedy pace, besides providing better health and education facilities to juvenile prisoners in jails. Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Amendment) Bill was moved by Humayun Saifullah Khan. Charter of Child Rights Bill 2009, moved by Dr Donya Aziz, aimed at promoting enabling environment to the children free of violence, abuse and exploitation.
