Dr Qamar Rais, a prominent Urdu poet, writer, critic, researcher and teacher passed away in Delhi (India) on Wednesday night. He was in coma for about last 15 days, his friends here informed Business Recorder. Dr Rais was born on July 21, 1932 at Shahjahan Pur (Up-India).
He completed his higher education at Lakhnow University and got his PhD from Alighar University on his thesis on Perem Chand's short story writing. He joined Delhi University as a lecturer in 1957 and retired from there as a professor. He spent many years at Tashkent University teaching oriental languages.
Presently he was vice chairman of Urdu Academy, Delhi, India. He remained Secretary General of Progressive Writers Association for more than 18 years. He has left behind a widow, scores of friends and students in thousands to mourn his death and over a dozen books for up coming generations to benefit from.
