Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has demanded of the government to dismiss Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Sultan Salahuddin Babar Khattak and Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Karachi Waseem Ahmed for "patronising land and drug mafia in Karachi."
IGP Sindh and CCPO Karachi misguided and misled Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah in a briefing on city violence and tried to give an ethnic colour to the incidents of violence, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) made these allegations in a telephonic press conference at Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Friday.
MQM Rabita Committee member Mohammad Anwar addressed the conference from London. Deputy Convenor Rabita Committee Dr Farooq Sattar, Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Babar Khan Ghauri, Provincial Minister of Bureau of Supplies and Price Control Shoaib Bukhari, Sindh Health Minister Dr Saghir Ahmed and Sindh Minister for Information Technology Raza Haroon were present at the press conference.
"MQM has provided the government with ample proof against the land and drug mafia and demanded of the government to take strict action against them, but they have not paid heed to this very serious issue, which caused loss of 23 lives when these anti-state elements come down from hill tops and sprayed the innocent people of North Nazimabad with bullets on April 29, 2009," the MQM leader claimed.
Despite targeted killing of two party workers, MQM chief Altaf Hussain played a significant role towards efforts aimed at bringing peace in the city. "Instead of recognising and appreciating MQM efforts, IGP Sindh and CCPO Karachi in their briefing to the PM and Sindh CM tried to give an ethnic colour to these incidents of violence", they added.
They said the government is trying to repeat the history of 1992 when the government of the day prepared a list of MQM workers and launched an operation against them. He said that MQM chief Altaf Hussain is trying to protect city from anti-state elements but some government officials are hatching a conspiracy against MQM.
They said that as part of the conspiracy, the citizens of Karachi are being deprived of their licensed firearms. Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) should launch crackdown against people who have stored weapons in their godowns in Mangopir, Sherpao Colony and Quaidabad, but depriving people of their legal arms would be a great injustice, they said.
"The government should focus attention on the culprits of Lyari gang war, who have disrupted the peace of the entire town. Law enforcement agencies should launch operation against Rehman Dacoit and his accomplices who have murdered several people and they are also involved in so many cases of kidnapping for ransom", they said.
They demanded of the government to expel land and drug mafia from Al-Asif Square in the next 24 hours. Without elaborating, they said that the party would be forced to take "right step" if their demands were not met.
Meanwhile, reacting to MQM press conference, CCPO Karachi Waseem Ahmed said being a government official he could not issue any statement about the allegations made against him, adding that only the Sindh government and Sindh Home Minister could make comments over the statements made by MQM leaders.
