Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has called all parties conference (APC) on Swat and Malakand situation here on Monday (May 18), and on Friday Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani will give a detailed in-camera briefing to the parliamentary leaders on the status of the ongoing military operation.
The announcement to convene the APC was made by the Prime Minister in the National Assembly on the first day of the ongoing session. The APC would discuss the present security situation, particularly the military offensive against the militants in Swat and Malakand division, and would evolve a consensus on the sensitive issue.
Giving a policy statement in the National Assembly on Thursday, Minster for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan said that the Prime Minster had decided to call the APC on May 18 by inviting all the political and religious parties, which were in and outside of the parliament to show a unity and evolve a consensus approach over the military operation and tackling the post-war scenario.
He further said that on the desire of the political parties, the Chief of Army Staff would give a detailed in-camera briefing to the parliamentary leaders of all the political parties about the ground realities of the operation, which, he said, could not be discussed in public or on the floor of the House due to the security reasons.
Giving justification on delay in calling of the APC, he said, some political leaders were out of the country, causing to delay in convening this important meeting. The minister said that a meeting in the Prime Minister House was held on Wednesday, and decided the date for the conference.
He said that the invitation letters to all the leadership would be send from Thursday. Babar Awan said there was consensus amongst the leader of the house, leader of the opposition and other parliamentary parties to hold APC and briefing on the military operation. The APC, he said, was being convened in consultation with the entire political leadership.
