Despite high security alert following a threat of suicide attack on commercial plazas and District courts in Multan, five armed men entered the District courts stabbed a senior Lawyer, Allah Ditta Kalroo escaped easily amidst deployment of heavy police contingent.
To check the loopholes in the security measures, a press photographer put his bag under the jeep of City Traffic Police Officer. Then he put it on the roof of another officer, but no one took notice of his activities. However, there was no end to routine crime during the last 24 hours. Weak security measures allowed robbers to snatch seven motor cycles, two women were reported to be kidnapped, firing incident on the offices of cable network was also recorded and a constable was gunned down at police post.
Keeping in view the prevailing law and order situation in Multan, police beefed up security and started intensive patrolling across the city. The Regional Police Officer Multan had also convened a meeting of Multan region police officers and asked the CPO to keep the force vigilant against criminals and terrorists. Though it is hard to stop suicide attackers even after receiving threat warnings, still there is need to revamp the sensitive law enforcing agencies to avoid further destruction.
On the other hand, robbers also managed to loot citizens to their satisfaction by setting aside the impact of police patrolling. The City Police in the city of Multan proved to be a safe haven for dacoits, as a record number of robbery incidents were reported during the last one week.
Robbers deprived around 64 citizens of cash, gold ornaments and cell phones and shot dead a trader of Suraj Kund road, Khalid Bhatti and left others injured as they tried to resist. Out of total reported incidents, 16 motorcycles and three cars were also snatched or stolen from different localities of the division.
In the Cantt Police division during the last week, robbers deprived 42 people of cash, valuables and mobile phones. Out of total reported incidents, four motorcycles and seven cars were also taken away. Robbers during robbery attempts shot two people injured.
The Multan City Police Officer, Syed Saud Aziz has adopted a new strategy to curtail the terrorist and criminal activities in the provincial metropolis. He has asked the citizens to keep their Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) with them. It would definitely help police in nabbing terrorists and criminals, but there is a need to launch the move on scientific methods.
There should be proper CNIC readable machines to rule out use of fake identity cards. The role of Punjab government is important in this regard for the provision of CNICs to each citizen, besides establishing DNA database to foil the nefarious designs of terrorists.
A new strategy will also create troubles for citizens, as police in such cases let people go after taking bribes. Therefore, the police should stay vigil and strictly check police pickets to cope with any possible criminal activity.
