The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to delete thousands of inactive National Tax Numbers (NTNs) issued up to 1995 where NTN holders have failed to file their income tax returns. Sources told Business Recorder on Friday that there is a huge gap in NTNs issued to the business community and the actual number of income tax returns filed by them.
It is necessary to maximise the number of persons filing returns to ensure broadening the tax base. The department also introduced new NTN form which will replace the previous version of the NTN form.
The FBR has also issued instructions to Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited (PRAL) to delete dormant/inactive NTNs issued up to 1995, after verification. The exercise would be completed by June 30, 2009. Sources said that the purpose of the exercise is to delete the NTNs where returns have not been filed due to closure of business, or any other reason.
