All those convicts who fulfil requisite conditions, while undergoing different terms of sentences in various 34 jails across the province, especially life imprisonment's, will be released on parole in Punjab. Additional Secretary Home (Jails) Punjab, Dr Jamal Yousaf told newsmen here on Friday that 25 convicts out of total of 28 were released on parole two days back in the line with the new judicial policy and in accordance with the law.
He said a total of 28 cases were presented before the parole release committee of which 25 were approved on merit. He said that Home Department had sought a detailed report from IG Prisons Punjab for such convicts who fell in the category of parole but had not yet been released because their cases were neither processed nor presented before the committee.
The official regretted that in past, only "influential convicts" used to be released on parole while others kept on languishing in prisons. "Now it has now been decided in principle to release all such convicts, especially life imprisonment ones, on parole who fall in the category of parole".
Dr Jamal Yousaf said, "We have adopted a most transparent procedure for the release of convicts on parole only those can be benefit who fulfils the conditions". He said that newly introduced judicial policy also envisaged the release of the convicts on parole to lessen over crowding in the jails.
He said regular meetings for release of such convicts on merit would be held. Inspector General of Prisons Punjab, Kokab Nadeem Warriach had already directed all range DIGs and Superintendent of all Central and district jails to submit information in this regard for further submission to Home Department. It may be mentioned that Punjab jails, with the sanctioned collective capacity of 17,521 prisoners, are three-fold over crowded.
