The Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), on Wednesday, urged the government to save both, trade and industry, from total collapse in the wake of the worst-ever power crisis that has gripped the country. "It is a national loss to the country in the shape of loss of export orders, closure of business houses, industrial units and the laying off of workers."
In a statement issued here, the MCCI President Anis Ahmed Sheikh said that as there was no immediate solution in sight, the government should at least waive off the accrued interest/mark-up and other related government levies to ensure some breathing space to the manufacturing sector. As was being done in the developed world, where their respective governments had stepped in to save the economy.
The MCCI President said that due to the unavailability of electricity and the resultant closure of industrial units, businessmen were unable even to pay the salaries to their employees, what to talk of other dues.
The MCCI President said that the energy situation had reached the point of no return, despite the fact that there was a Ministry of Water and Power, a Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB), Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO), Alternate Energy Development Board (AEDB) and the National Electric Power Regular Authority (NEPRA).
