Director Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) and former president Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), Ghulam Sarwar Khan Mohmand said that militancy had destroyed the hotelier and tourism industry in Swat.
Speaking in the Guest Hour Programme of the Peshawar Press Club (PPC), he said that militancy and the military operation had rendered 50000 workers unemployed in Swat. He said that the rulers, in the name of assistance, were moving a begging bowl for the relief of internally displaced persons (IDPs).
He dispelled the impression that the situation in Afghanistan had affected Pakistan and attributed it to the ill-planned policies and interference of foreign elements. "Pakistani rulers, instead of interfering in the affairs of others, should pay attention to the resolution of their own problems," contended Mohmand.
Mohmand, who served as President SCCI for two stints, said that lawlessness had resulted in the closure of 60 percent industrial units in the province, which had increased unemployment manifold. He said that Pakistan was facing deficiency in sincere political leadership, which had prevented putting the country on the track of development.
The province, he said was passing through a war-like situation and demanded of the government to declare it a calamity hit area to grant special incentives for the business community. He urged the provincial government to accelerate the struggle for the achievement of rights from the Federal government.
The people of NWFP, he said were sacrificing their lives for maintaining the integrity of the country. For the encouragement and restoration of the confidence of the militancy and operation-affected people, he called for opening the offices of the members of the provincial cabinet in the Malakand Division.
To a question regarding the energy crisis, he said that the province had the potential of generating 40000 MW hydropower, while the shortage was merely 4000 MW, which would be easily overcome through the utilisation of the water resources of the province.
