Turkish President Abdullah Gul on Wednesday signed into law changes aimed at meeting EU criteria limiting the power of military courts, despite opposition from the military, a statement on the presidential website said. Parliament last month passed legal changes that allow civilian courts to try military personnel during peacetime and bar military courts from prosecuting civilians.
The main opposition parties said they would appeal to the Constitutional Court to strike down the law if Gul approved it. Turkish media cited senior military officials as saying the law was unconstitutional.
