Accompanied by Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan on Thursday inaugurated country's first multi-storeyed parking plaza in Saddar which has a capacity to park 700 cars and 500 motorcycles at a time. Speaking on the occasion the Governor said that there had been talk about construction of parking plaza in country for quite sometime.
But it is a matter of delight for citizens of Karachi that country's first multi-storeyed parking plaza has been constructed here by the present city government and he felicitated Nazim Mustafa Kamal and the City Government on the accomplishment of this project.
The Governor said that if one would cite an example of good governance at any administrative level, then only one name clicks the mind and that is of our city Nazim Mustafa Kamal under whose leadership, the City Government made the accomplishment of impossible and difficult projects possible.
He said that Karachi has a big talent and despite all odds, this city not only maintained its status in the country and at international level, but it is also growing. During the last 4 years, Karachi, as an important city of Pakistan, earned great global importance and its Mayor was declared as one of the "Best Mayors" which was a matter of pride for entire country, Dr Ibad noted.
Previously no one else served Karachi in this manner, he pointed out and added that construction of signal-free corridor is not an easy task but here too the corridors were completed in a short period. The City Nazim and his team played an important role in transforming the very destiny of this city and today not only the quality of life of people of Karachi has risen but positive effects were cast on the activities of business community.
Sindh Governor hoped that the concepts which city government gave for the development of this city, would serve as the basis for work in the future and Karachiites would get more facilities. Earlier addressing the ceremony City Nazim Mustafa Kamal said today is a day of rejoicing for the people of Karachi and Pakistan as the country's first ever parking plaza has been made operational.
He said that facilities of international standard have been provided in this plaza while lot of development works carried out in its surroundings, which have changed the very face of Saddar area. Mustafa Kamal said that within two months, the 18 Km distance from here to Safoora Goth and another 10 Km ahead upto Toll Plaza will become signal free after the completion of signal-free corridor-III on which 5 flyovers and an underpass are being provided.
He said that long pending Preedy Street project was also implemented with the exemplary co-operation of people. Under the plan, he informed, the entire Saddar area is being made pedestrian area where people coming from all parts of the city would park their vehicles at the specified place, could do shopping and carry out their business matters. He stated that a plan has been prepared for constructing a 3 to 4 level underground parking area at Jehangir Park, which too will be beautifully reconstructed, thus avoiding the emergence of any encroachments.
In this regard the Nazim asked the people seeking stay order from the Supreme Court to let them work or else in the future there would be mass encroachments if the project is not implemented in 1 to 2 years, he contended. Earlier EDO Transport Iftekhar Qaimkhani while giving details of the project said that soon after taking over, the City Nazim had comprehended the need for traffic management in the area and work on it started in 2006 and completed at a cost of Rs 560 million.
He said the 11-storeyed parking plaza has been made fully computerised while video cameras, lifts and generators have also been installed. He said this project fully in line with the Master Plan. EDO said this plot on which the parking plaza has been constructed was the property of City Government. After the inauguration ceremony the Governor, along with Nazim Mustafa Kamal inspected the Corridor-III project, Preedy Street and other ancillary projects.-PR
