Standing Committee of the National Assembly on Communications has decided that work on the Lowari Rail Tunnel project will soon be resumed for which national and international contractors will be taken into confidence on security matters.
The Standing Committee of the National Assembly on Communications met here on Friday with Syed Ahmad Zafar in the chair, in which it was also decided that Pakistan Army's help will also be sought for Lowari Rail Tunnel project's completion. Federal Minister for Communications Dr Arbab Alamgir Khan Khalil assured the Standing Committee that the Ministry of Communications had taken extraordinary measures for timely completion of the under construction highways throughout the country.
However, he said, there had been obstacles in the completion of some of the projects but the present government was determined to utilise all its resources to remove obstacles and ensure timely completion of these projects.
Other members of the Standing Committee Dost Muhammad Mazari, Abdul Majeed Khan Khanan Khel, Ghaus Bakhsh Khan Meher, Dr Uresh Kumar, Sheikh Salah-ud-din and Federal Secretary Communications Sharif Ahmad Khan, Chairman NHA Chaudhry Altaf Ahmad, Member Operations NHA Pir Muhammad Akbar Rashdi, Member Construction Mir Hasan Rind, Member Admn Athar Hussain Sial, and Inspector General Motorway Police Dr Waseem also attended the meeting.
Chairman of the Standing Committee, Syed Ahmad Zafar urged the NHA officials to complete all development projects including Lowari Tunnel in time, and national and international contractors of Lowari Tunnel should be taken into confidence and work should soon be resumed on this important project so that the travel problems of the local populace could be resolved and strong communication links could be developed with the neighbouring countries.
During the meeting a sub-committee of the Standing Committee on Communications was also set up on Lowari Tunnel which will visit these sites headed by the federal minister and negotiate with the concerned officials for the timely completion of these projects. In the meeting, overloading control on the highways, reconstruction of worn out roads, problems regarding toll plazas, were also discussed.
NHA Chairman, while giving a detailed briefing to the participants, said 12 thousand kilometres of highways had been constructed by the NHA which had not only given a boost to industry, trade, tourism, and agriculture but the public had also been provided quality travel facilities.
The Standing Committee expressed its overall satisfaction on the affairs of the communications sector, whereas, Dr Arbab Alamgir Khan Khalil assured the participants that the government was paying special attention to the construction of highways and other development projects and they were determined to complete every project without any hindrance.
