Political freedom and a politically sound state are pre-requisite for economic liberalisation in the country. President Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Tariq Sayeed stated this in his welcome address at the inaugural session of a two-day seminar on 'Saarc government's commitment to economic freedom in South Asia' commenced on Tuesday.
He suggested to the governments in South Asia to adopt compatible measures to promote concept of economic freedom in the respective countries, which will help foster the process of economic integration of South Asia. He urged upon the need for involvement of the youth in the campaign of economic freedom stating that youth could play pivotal role in socio-economic liberalisation in the region.
H E Sharat Sambharwal, High Commissioner of India to Pakistan as guest of honour said that India had embarked upon liberal policies to ensure economic freedom merits infrastructural development as a major component. He said that Dr Manmohan Singh has given South Asian Vision which aims at transformation of South Asia from ignorance to knowledge-based economy.
President, FPCCI, Sultan Ahmed Chawla who was chief guest expressed the commitment of the business community as an active role for promoting economic freedom concept in the country. While counting 10 basic principles of economic freedom, he emphasised for removal of unnecessary barriers to trade and investment. He urged upon remodelling of economic policies in line with the discipline of free-market economy.-PR
