A total number of 56,909 under trial prisoners and convicts including 802 women confined in 32 jails across the province will observe fast during the holy month of Ramazan-ul-Mubarak. Inspector General Prisons Punjab, Kokab Nadeem Warriach told newsmen here on Friday that immaculate arrangements had been made in all Punjab jails during the month of Ramazan to provide best quality food to prisoners during "Sehri and Iftar" on the direction of Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif.
He said, "Special lectures on Islamic values will be delivered to prisoners by the religious personalities at jail mosques on daily basis," he said, adding that special arrangements had also been made for offering prayers, besides Taraveeh.
The IG stated that federal, provincial ministers, MNAs, MPAs, senators, district Nazims, district and session judges and district police officers had also been requested to pay surprise visits to jails to check the arrangements and standard of food. Kokab Nadeem Warriach said that all the doctors posted in the jails had also been directed to check the quality of food before it was cooked and served.
He said the Chief Minister had revised the diet menu and dietary charges of all prisoners as well as the convicts from Rs 19.57 to Rs 50 per day. "The government is bearing an additional expenditure of one billion rupees on the provision of revised menu effective from August 1 last year."
He said that new menu included chicken four days a week and beef two days, besides best quality Kernal super Basmati rice. He said that all range DIGs and superintendents of jails throughout the province had been directed to check quality of food during surprise visits and take stock of the arrangements, especially the security measures in and around the prisons.
