Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has urged for immediate arrest of culprits responsible for killing of Dr Sajjad Arain in Hyderabad and Dr Abid Zaidi in Quetta. Dr Habib-ur-Rehman Soomro, Secretary General, PMA - Centre; Dr Samrina Hashmi, General Secretary, PMA - Karachi and Dr Aziz Khan Tank, President, PMA - Karachi observed that the two doctors, killed recently within a gap of few days, appeared to be victimised.
Addressing a press conference they attributed loss of the two doctors to lack of adequate security at public places. "We demand that police mobiles and cops must be deployed at all public places, with specific reference to school, colleges, hospital and clinics," said the PMA office bearers.
"Police responsible for safety and security of citizens must not simply focus on VVIP duties," they stressed. The representatives of doctors' community regretted inability of law enforcers to apprehend killers, who according to them were well identified.
"At this stage PMA feels that the last resort left for the doctors may be to go on strike for an indefinite period," they said, adding that they would be reluctantly forced to do so if the authorities failed to arrest the killers of the doctors. Dr Aziz Khan and Dr Samrina Hashmi said PMA, Karachi on every occasion had drawn attention of the law and order enforcing agencies towards plight of doctors, but to no effect.
They regretted that by now the phenomena of killing doctors had become a routine, and right to life of those who were providing solace to humanity irrespective of sex, colours, religion or beliefs, was sadly little available. It is unfortunate that hundreds of Pakistani doctors who preferred to leave their luxurious life abroad and came to serve the country men, may now be leaving the country for their safety, said the PMA office bearers.
