PPP Senator Farhat Abbas Tuesday said Prime Minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani, had approved a package of Rs 120 million for the development of Peshawar city. She said such development packages would also be sought for other districts of the province. Addressing a press conference here at the Peshawar Press Club (PPC), she said the amount would be spent on electrification and drinking water schemes.
She was flanked by senior PPP leaders, including former district nazim, Azam Afridi, party's city president, Syed Ayub Shah, Saeed Ahmad Khan, Israr Khan Nehqi, Khawaja Yawar Naseer and Tahir Abbas. She congratulated President Asif Ali Zardari on successful completion of one-year in the presidency and the promotion of democracy in the country.
She said after the assassination of PPP chairperson, Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan was facing anarchy and was on the verge of disintegration, but the slogan of Pakistan Khapey by Asif Zardari saved it from crises. She said the PPP had always been handed over government at the time when country was on the verge of being declared bankrupt and national treasury was empty. However, she said the party had always pulled the country out of difficult times.
She said when the PPP came into power in 1971 the country had already been disintegrated and more than 90,000 military personnel were taken prisoners by India. However, she said despite of these challenges (late) Zulfikar Ali Bhutto not only got the occupied land back, but also got the surrendered military personnel released from India's custody.
The PPP Senator and party workers expressed their satisfaction over the performance PPP-led federal government. However, Saeed Ahmad Khan, a senior leader of the party, expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of both the federal and provincial governments. He maintained that PPP workers at both provincial and federal government levels were disgraced and attention was not paid to resolve their problems.
In the NWFP, he said the situation was more grim as no written agreement had been signed with the ANP. He said a committee headed by Mian Raza Rabbani was constituted for the government. Saeed Ahmad said the Speaker and the Provincial senior minister had negotiated only for their own positions. He said the Provincial President of the PPP was hinted at the constitution of a new committee.
