Hamdard, which means "Co Sharer in Suffering", was started in Delhi in 1906 as an herbal shop by Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed. After the partition of India, Shaheed Hakim Mohammad Said, the younger son of Hakim Abdul Majeed, migrated to Pakistan and established Hamdard Pakistan in 1948.
Since then, Hamdard is a household name in Pakistan and millions of people have had their health improved, their pain relieved, and problems alleviated by this institution. Hamdard has almost six hundred (600) herbal products. The products range fulfils the health requirement of all age groups ie from infants to the aged. Rooh Afza is one of the most popular products of Hamdard since 1907. Other popular brands of Hamdard are Masturin, Sualin, Suduri, Carmina, Joshina, Tunsukh, Naunehal Gripe Water, Safi, Hamdard Ghutti and Miswak Hamdard Peelu Toothpaste.
In 1953, Hakim Mohammad Said declared Hamdard a Waqf (Islamic Irrevocable Trust) in which the entire profits of Hamdard Pakistan were made over for the trust to use in the development of health, education and similar nation building and philanthropic activities. Hamdard Foundation Pakistan was created to manage these funds.
Hamdard's central structure is based in Karachi, Pakistan, where majority of the herbal products are manufactured on modern lines. Apart from Karachi, its manufacturing units are in operation in other big cities of Pakistan to meet the growing demand. In Lahore, a manufacturing plant equipped with the latest machinery is engaged in the production of syrups and medicines. Another modern plant is also operational at Peshawar.
In Hamdard, herbal preparations are made on the principles of the Greco-Arab system of medicine. For quality products Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and the Quality Management System ISO 9001:20000 have been implemented in Hamdard Laboratories.
