In the recent past towers of 500 KV Sheikh Muhammadi Transmission Line were blown up by miscreants in sabotage activities which resultantly disrupted power supply to different areas in NWFP and additional load shedding was carried out in the province.
In a press release, Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) has clarified to members of the provincial assembly and people that the additional load shedding was carried out in different areas of NWFP was only due to rehabilitation and reconstruction work of the towers damaged in sabotage activities.
Keeping in view the difficulties of the people, Pesco restored electricity through alternative sources but restoration of power supply on permanent basis was not possible due to Ramazan because this repair could have put excessive load shedding on public in Ramazan.
However immediately after Ramadan Pesco started rehabilitation work to repair the towers to restore the power supply on permanent basis to the affected areas.
During rehabilitation and reconstruction work of 500 KV Sheikh Muhammadi Transmission Line Towers, Pesco was compelled to carry out additional Load Shedding in addition to Scheduled Load Shedding for which People were informed accordingly.
Due to this work on 500 KV Transmission Line, additional Load Shedding was carried out for last few days. The rehabilitation and reconstruction work has now been completed and now only the routine/scheduled load shedding of 6 to 8 hours would be carried out in NWFP like in the other parts of the country.
However in some areas of NWFP due to system constraints, additional load shedding is also carried out in addition to routine load shedding.
It is worth mentioning here that 30 percent areas in NWFP are hard areas where power pilferage is very high and people use electricity through direct hooks, which puts extra load on system and thus becomes a cause of additional load shedding there.
Pesco regrets the inconvenience caused and assures that no additional load shedding would be carried out in addition to schedule. If every consumer switches off one bulb of 100 watts, we will be able to save at least 240 MW of electricity which will proportionally reduce the load shedding.
