Shaikh Shafiq Rafiq, Zonal Chairman, Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (Prgmea) has lamented on the recurring cases of cargo pilferage at the Karachi airport. In a press statement here on Saturday he said, "We are constantly receiving such complaints from our member companies but no concrete action has been taken by the government to check such complaints."
He pointed out that exporters were receiving debit notes amounting to thousands of dollars and also face embarrassment before their international customers, who are pointing out that such problems arise for shipments coming from Pakistan only. Upon investigation of one such complainant, it was revealed that garments reported missing from Karachi Airport were being sold in the local markets, he added.
He said that Prgmea has repeatedly taken up this matter with Pakistan Customs who had clarified that the warehousing facilities at the airport were not under the jurisdiction of Customs but under the authority of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). "All the concerned agencies should sit together to solve this grave problem because such incidents are tarnishing the image of Pakistan internationally," he added.-PR
