Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Ali Larijani has called for enhanced co-operation with Pakistan in all fields, especially to counter terrorism in the region. He stated this in his meeting with Chairman Senate, Farooq H. Naek, while leading the Iranian Parliamentary delegation, on the sidelines of the 121st International Parliamentary Union Assembly in Geneva.
Farooq H. Naek, while condemning the recent terrorist bombing in Iran, conveyed his deepest sympathies to the people and government of Iran. He assured Larijani that Pakistan would take all steps necessary to eradicate extremism and terrorism, since it was not only in the national interest of Pakistan but also important for the security of the region.
Addressing the world parliamentarians at the Assembly, Farooq Naek said food security is the foremost responsibility of the governments. He pointed out that the developing countries were the most adversely affected by the global food crisis. Farooq Naek identified four major causes of the crisis: lack of integrated policy, existence of international trade practices that primarily benefit the developed countries, lack of investment in agriculture sector and diversion of food crops from developing countries to production of bio-fuel in developed countries.
Chairman senate called upon the leading parliamentarians of the world to enhance co-operation towards achieving food security. He called for promoting agricultural research, building south-south co-operation, strengthening food procurement systems, development of coherent and balanced trade and tariff policies, ensuring emergency food assistance and generating equitable policies, that stimulate domestic production while safeguarding consumer welfare.
Chairman Senate is leading Pakistan's Parliamentary delegation to the Assembly, including Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Faisal Kareem Kundi, Senators Dr Safdar Abbasi, Dr Muhammad Ismail Buledi, Muhammad Ghufran Khan, Wali Muhammad Badini, MNAs Abdul Qadir Patel, Dr Attiya Inayatullah and Ejaz Virk.
