The average price of Bangladeshi teas rose 1.28 percent to 139.85 taka ($2.02) per kg on higher demand at the weekly auction on Tuesday, brokers said. More than 1.54 million kg were sold on average at 139.85 taka per kg, up 1.77 taka from the last sale. Some 10.19 percent of teas on offer remained unsold and were taken back.
Buyers for Pakistan and Bangladesh, including exporters mainly to the Commonwealth of Independent States participated in the sale at the country's lone auction centre in the main port city Chittagong. "There was strong demand. Good liquoring varieties appreciated, but poorer types eased," said an executive of the National Brokers Limited, the country's largest tea broker.
Some 150 kg of well made Pekoe Fannings realised the highest price of 185 taka per kg followed by another 300 kg of good liquoring Golden Broken Orange Pekoe selling at 183 taka while other grades were sold between 110 taka and 180 taka per kg. The next weekly auction will be held on October 27, with an offer of 1.9 million kg.
