The Indus River System Authority (Irsa) has agreed to release extra water from Tarbela and Mangla dams during the winter season for hydel power generation to meet electricity needs of the industrial, commercial and domestic consumers, official sources told Business Recorder here on Thursday.
They said Irsa will daily release 15000 cusecs water from Tarbela dam and 8,000 cusecs downstream the Mangla dam besides the normal flows of the rivers to keep maximum number of hydel power generating units into operation. It may be added that Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) gets about 6,400 MW electricity from the hydel power stations during the peak river water inflows in summer.
However as the water inflow drops in the rivers, the generation capacity of the hydel power units also comes down. The Ministry of Water and Power says that despite peak power generation, there is still a gap of 2053 kW between demand and supply. It said the total generation on Thursday was 11121 MW, demand 13,174, and shortfall: 2053 MW. The 640 MW were exported to KESC.
