New smartphone with ‘holographic display’

A leading company marked itself the first one to introduce a holographic smartphone costing $1,200.

RED Camera is a leading manufacturer of professional digital cinema cameras. Its CEO Jim Jannard disclosed that the company has been working to create the holographic screen with a company Leia Inc, a spin-off from Hewlett-Packard labs that calls itself ‘the leading provider of light field holographic display solutions for mobile’.

The phone called Hydrogen One costs around $1,200. Light field displays makes use of numerous layers of LCDs with a directional backlight that would allow users to see two different views of the same object, generating a 3D effect, explained Engadget.

According to Leia ‘it leverages recent breakthroughs in nano-photonic design and manufacturing to provide a complete light field holographic display solution for mobile devices’. The technology will preview a holographic effect while keeping normal operation of the display intact.

However, for photos, games and videos to be viewed in holographic form, they will have to be produced or shot in ‘.h4v’ format (holographic 4-View), informed Business Insider.

RED has now a long-term exclusive partnership with Leia with Jannard soon to join its board of directors along with making an investment in the firm.

The phone will be launched in the first half of 2018 whereas; functional samples would be ready by few months.
