Chief Election Commissioner, Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Rahim Nawaz Khan Durrani Monday said 7,17, 286 male and female voters would use their right of franchise in the GB election, scheduled to be held on November 12.
Addressing a press conference here, he said out of the total voters, there are 3,32,377 female voters and 3,84, 909 male voters who would cast their votes to elect 23 Members for the legislative assembly.
He said the election is being held in 23 constituencies out of 24 and there are 256 final candidates who would contest election. There would be no polling in constituency GB-19 where election has been postponed due to demise of MQM candidate Sher Bahadur Khan.
The Election Commissioner said to ensure smooth conduct of election, 982 polling stations in all six districts of GB, of which 253 are dedicated for women voters while 258 polling stations are established for the male voters. Similarly, he said there would also be 511 mixed polling stations where both male and female would be allowed to cast their votes.
He said foolproof security measures have been adopted under which appropriate security staff would be deployed at all the polling stations especially at the sensitive and highly sensitive stations to ensure smooth conduct of the election and transparency.Giving further details about the polling stations, the Chief Election Commissioner said 153 sensitive polling stations and 119 sensitive stations have been declared.
Answering a question, he said the election would be held in free, fair and transparent manner, adding that voters who posses Computerised National Identity Cards (CNIC) would only be allowed to cast their votes. This step has been taken to ensure transparency in the elections, he added.
Highlighting the other initiatives of election commission, he said, an election cell and a control room have also been established which would remain open round-the-clock to address complaints or give information about the election.
The Election Commissioner said to conduct the election in a smooth manner, 24 Returning Officers and 25 Assistant Returning Officers have been deployed while 3021 polling staff would also perform duties on the polling day.
