In view of shortage of sugar in the country, Wapda Authority has decided to impose a ban on sugar consumption in its offices all over Pakistan for a period of one month with effect from November 16, 2009. It may be noted that many other public departments have followed suit and restricted sugar consumption to a certain limit.
Similarly, offices of the private companies are also serving sugarless tea to their staff and visitors. One big factor behind this sugar austerity campaign is the absence of sugar in the market, both for domestic and commercial usage. One manager at a multinational firm told Business Recorder that they were consuming six to seven bags of 120 kg of sugar.
However, the absence of ample sugar in the market and high rate of the available sugar has forced the public and private sector further to stay away from purchase of sugar. The sugar crisis is lingering on despite all out efforts of the management champion chief minister of Punjab. The consumers, both domestic and commercial, are at the mercy of the sugar Mafia right from the millers to sugar dealers and retailers.
