While over 150 lower-grade employees of City District Government Karachi (CDGK), are facing acute financial problems for the last couple of months, the city government has secretly reinstated some of its favourites.
According to sources, over a dozen of the suspended employees have been reinstated and assigned their duties by the government through a fresh order while withdrawing the termination order, it had earlier issued to the employees.
They alleged that over 12 of the suspended employees had been restored by the concerned authority after receiving directives from the Naib Nazim Secretariat.
But rest of the employees, who had been serving the government from 10 to 36 years, were still waiting for the same action from the Nazim. Even the GP fund of the employees, which is their own money that they have deposited over a period of time deposited money, has been withheld by the authority, they alleged.
An employee, who did not want to be named, said that he would commit suicide in front of the concerned authorities, if his job was not restored by the CDGK and that he had served the government for over 30 years. He further said that he had performed his duty on the same day he was terminated by the Nazim.
They said that despite serving the government for many years and performing round-the-clock duty, especially during the monsoon season, the City Nazim had terminated their services on one day's notice and without any reason. Talking to Business Recorder on Saturday, some of the terminated employees, on condition of anonymity, said termination letters were issued to them while they were on leave.
Shafiqur Rehman, Malaria Coolie, of Health Department MPH section of CDGK, who, according to an office order No DO (MPH) 861/2009 dated 22-7-2009, had got a 60 day leave on full pay as per the report of the Director Internal Audit, CDGK, was also terminated prior to the completion of his sanctioned period of leave.
Interestingly, they claimed, the termination orders were also issued to some of the employees who were no more in this world. The sacked employees also alleged the move was aimed at creating vacancies for over 1500 new and politically motivated applicants.
The CDGK terminated the services of 152 employees of Health and Works and Services Department who, as it claimed, had been continuously absent from their duties. On the directives of City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal, District Officer Human Resources Management had issued the termination orders to the employees a few months ago. The CDGK official sources had claimed that the absconding employees were not attending their duties for a long time despite repeated warnings.
