It is a great dilemma and most ironic that while the largest revenue generator of foreign exchange, the textile sector is starving for cotton yarn there is absolutely no concern that the major input of this sector is blatantly being exported, lamented Jawed Bilwani, spokesman for the value added textile associations and chief co-ordinator, Pakistan hosiery manufacturers and exporters association.
Bilwani revealed that while in October, 2008, last year 7,931 metric tons of cotton was exported, this year, October, 2009, 25,728 metric tons of cotton has been exported which shows an increase of 224 percent over the previous year. Likewise the major input of the value added textile sector cotton yarn exports in October, 2008 was 40,287 metric tons and this year, October, 2009 exports of cotton yarn rose to 73,368, metric tons which clearly shows an increase of 82 percent over the previous year.
Bilwani bemoaned that it looks like the government is indeed heedless to the precarious situation the textile sector is in and is turning a blind eye to the grave predicament which will surely lead to the textile exporters failing to meet their commitments with their foreign buyers owing to non-availability of cotton yarn.
There would be a spate of cancellation of valuable orders, losing of our foreign markets leading to large number of closures of the textile units resulting in mass un-employment, chaos, and disaster. If the government did not wake up from its slumber and took immediate remedial action to drastically restrict such rampant exports of cotton yarn of at least below 32 single count.-PR
