The man who stabbed to death former boxing world champion Edip Sekowitsch in Vienna was found guilty of murder and was sentenced to 20 years behind bars.The 50-year-old victim, born as Edip Secovic in Serbia, was one of Austria's most successful boxers.
Vienna's criminal court found the 27-year-old suspect from Chechnya guilty of having committed the crime in August 2008, shortly after being thrown out of the pub that Sekowitsch operated, Austrian press agency APA reported. The verdict was pending an appeal by the suspect's lawyer.
The Chechen's name was not released, according to privacy regulations. In 1988, Sekowitsch was light-middleweight world champion of the World Athletic Association (WAA). One year later, he became the European Boxing Union (EBU) European champion in his weight class.
