The 17th anniversary of demolition of Babri mosque was observed in India as "Black Day" on Sunday under tight security as demonstrations were held in various parts of the country demanding to bring perpetrators of this crime to book.
The occasion has attained special importance as Liberhan judicial Commission report which has been tabled by the government in the parliament recently, has held BJP leadership including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L K Advani and RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal and Shiv Sena as responsible for this ugly act. Different Muslim organisations in different states including Uttar Pradesh have demanded implementation of recommendations of the Liberhan Commission report.
The Centre directed all states to take precautionary measures on the occasion and special pickets of security forces were set up in sensitive areas. However, Hindu organisations observed the day as "Vijay Diwas" or victory day. In the national capital, the government deployed security personnel at the Parliament Street, where several groups, including All India Babri Masjid Rebuilding Committee (AIBMRC), the Popular Front of India (PFI), the Shiv Sena and Hindu Mahasabha assembled to press their demands.
AIBMRC members demanded legal action against those indicted in the Liberhan report. They said BJP leader L K Advani and others mentioned in the report as culprits should be arrested and tried on a fast-track basis. Legal action is necessary against the RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal and Shiv Sena because they are responsible for demolition of the mosque, said AIBMRC President Mohammed Younus Siddiqui. AIBMRC also submitted a memorandum to President Pratibha Patil demanding to refer the Ayodhya case to the Supreme Court under Article 138-B of the Constitution for a "time-bound and binding" decision.
