At least 10 people were killed and 47 others injured in a suicide bomb blast near the gate of the Sessions Court here on Monday. An official of the bomb disposal squad (BDS) said that the suicide bomber, who arrived in an auto-rickshaw and tried to enter the Sessions Court, but when he was stopped at the gate of the Sessions Court, he detonated explosive tied around his body. The police found the head of the suicide bomber.
The blast occurred at the sensitive place near Central Jail, Peshawar, Civil Secretariat, MPAs Hostel and the Governor's House. It was the second suicide attack, near judicial offices here since November 19 strike on Judicial Complex on Khyber Road, claiming 19 lives and injuring 50 others.
The victims have been identified as Roohullah (ASI), Iftikhar, Irshad and Nasir (foot constables), Suleman and Hussain. The identity of four other could not be ascertained. The bomb disposal squad confirmed the use of six to seven kilograms of explosive materials in the blast.
The bodies and injured persons were rushed to Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) where emergency was already declared. According to hospital sources, six bodies were removed to the hospital, while five critically injured succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
Forty-seven injured are being provided treatment at the hospital, where the conditions of two were stated to be serious. The injured also included three lawyers and three women. NWFP ministers Bashir Ahmad Bilour, Mian Iftikhar Hussein and Syed Aqil Shah visited the hospital and enquired about the health of the injured persons.
Speaking on the occasion, Mian Iftikhar Hussein condemned the suicide-bombing incident, and reiterated the resolve of the government for the elimination of the terrorism. Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti has condemned the incident, and said that the country was passing through a warlike situation. He said that they were battling the terrorism. "It is our own war and would continue taking efforts for winning of the war in any circumstances," Hoti said.
