Federal Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Dr Babar Awan on Monday said that new Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) would be appointed within a week and in this connection consultative process with the President and Prime Minister is in the final stage.
Talking to a delegation of Deputy Attorney Generals from the four provinces, the minister asked them to do work hard and consult law books to keep themselves abreast of new judgements. "Be loyal to the country and democracy as dedication, fair play and transparency is imperative for good governance," he stressed. The Minister said PPP led democratic government believes in freedom of judiciary as it has practically demonstrated by making the courts independent.
Institutions have been ruined during nine years of dictatorship regimes, adding that million of peoples are not getting access to justice despite spending billion of rupees and making new institutions for the purpose. He said the supreme authority in the country is Parliament, which has the power to make, amend or abolish laws. Dr Awan openly invited the parliamentary leadership, NGO, Bar Councils and Bar Associations to come forward and guide for making legislation for vulnerable people and destitute to provide them relief.
"The Ministry of Law and Justice will be made if not a hero but at least partner of the lawyers' community as it was being run in a bureaucratic style. The object of the meeting with all of you was introductory and to exchange views," the minister told to the delegation.-PR
