Senior Provincial Minister Raja Riaz Ahmad has said major canals of Punjab were being closed on alternate days which would help provide water for electricity production and wheat. "Desilting will complete by January 31 at all cost and there will be no extension in it," he added. He was presiding over a meeting attended by all chief engineers, says a DGPR handout issued on Sunday.
The senior minister said everyone should follow the announced schedule, adding that the Irrigation Department was already in contact with Wapda, the federal government and the other departments. He said latest machinery should be used for desilting to save time and produce better results.
Raja Riaz said water scarcity in canals was a bitter reality and installation of solar energy tube-wells was also under consideration. He hinted at special subsidy on agriculture tube-wells in some districts to provide relief to growers.
