I have been reading a lot of letters and editorials on the topic of the demolition of Makro's Saddar outlet and it makes me sad to see people can't recognise something worthwhile that has been made available for their convenience. I have been a resident of Karachi since after the partition and have seen the city grow to become the great metropolitan that it is today.
This has been made possible through these developments and modern businesses. I believe these endeavours are necessary for the development and maintenance of the city, as well as the country. I am not denying the need for recreation for children but I do believe that a playground is not the answer to that. There are at present many playgrounds and parks for children in every area.
This particular plot will only go to waste after the demolition of this building because that has been the case for the last 20 years of more. People must realise that by building a playground where hundreds of people are employed will lead to unemployment. That will, in turn, not let the children of this area have the opportunity to utilising the playground, as they will eventually be forced to find work to support the family.
The government should have built the playground before the store was built. Now the consequences seem dismal and in these times of recession people need all the jobs that they can get. I request your readers to think about it and the media to work towards something constructive.
