Arson-hit markets: shopkeepers submit 2,630 claims with KCCI

The affected shopkeepers of December 28 arson and riots have submitted more than 2,630 claims with the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). The chamber has decided not to extend the due date for filing claim forms, which is January 20.
Seven different teams of KCCI are scrutinising the claim forms. During the process, the affected shopkeepers, who have filed heavy claims, are being called to explain and justify their claims. Sources said that a shopkeeper filed clams of Rs 10.2 million as losses. When the shopkeeper was called to explain and justify such huge amount and how he managed to store goods worth such huge amount in a small shop of 5x10 feet. After thorough examination, the shopkeeper agreed to file revised claim of Rs 9 lakh.
The teams also detected few cases of duplicate claims. When the claimants were called to explain why they have filed duplicate claims, the shopkeepers said that initially they filed claims with the associations of their markets or with Jamiat Delhi Sodagarans. Later, when they came to know that KCCI was collecting claim forms, they also submitted their claims with KCCI. They said when all the claims collected by different associations were clubbed, the problem arose.
