Markazi Anjuman Tajiran South Punjab, Multan Tajir Ittehad, Anjuman Tajiran Cantonment, Wholesale Cloth Merchants Chungi No 14, Computers Dealers Association, Wholesale Chemists and Druggists and more than a dozen other traders organisations claimed that strike call was fizzled out as the traders of Southern Punjab did not let ear to this call and they reposed their confidence in the leadership of Asif Ali Zardari and Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani.
They said that traders had already rejected the strike call by the Pakistan Traders Alliance and Chamber of small traders on January 20, saying it unjust and kept their business open.
Addressing a press conference in the market on Wednesday, Khawaja Suleman Siddiqui, Malik Nazir Ahmed Awan, Muhammad Akhtar Butt, Zain-ul-Abideen Motiwalay, Sh Ikram Shehzad, Sh Akram Hakim, Arif Fasih-ullah,Riaz Shaheen Chaudhry, Soofi Abdul Rehman Bhatti, Bilal Ahmed Butt, Dr Ghazanfar Malik, Shaikh Javed Akhtar, Mian Fareed Qureshi, Syed Rauf Shah said that some elements were trying to disrupt the normalcy and playing their political game at the cost of traders' business.
They are not loyal to the traders, as they are not real representatives of the traders. They said that they did not help the traders when the Al-Haram Market and hotel were demolished, Pak-gate to Khuni Burj marker was dismantled. However they demanded of the government not to increase the power and gas tariff, end the load shedding by generating more power. They said that country couldn't afford the strikes and agitation at this juncture.
They said the government should have visualised the situation keeping in view the problems faced by the business community and should have done proper planning to avoid the eruption of such crisis. They also criticised the government's decision to raise electricity and gas prices from January 1, 2010. They said instead of raising power and gas prices, the government should reduce prices of the POL products and other utilities so that the industry could flourish in the country.
