Farmers' organisations, expressing their grave concern over the shortage of water, have urged the government to avoid unnecessary long closure of canals, as it is causing a very bad impact on the coming wheat and other crops. President Kisan Board Pakistan (KBP) Sardar Zafar Hussein Khan in a statement issued here Monday said that the annual canal closure for desilting campaign should not be prolonged.
He said that continuous drought like situation, less rainfall and prolonged loadshedding had created numerous problems for the farmers. He said that long canal closure and non-availability of water was causing huge loss to the crops of the present season. Sardar Zafar urged the government to ensure immediate availability of water in the canals.
He also drew the attention of the government towards Indian water aggression. He said that the government should ask India to provide Pakistan due share of water according to Indus Basic Water Treaty and also immediately approach the international Court of Justice (ICJ).
Meanwhile Director Farmers Associates Pakistan (FAP) Wheat Committee, Rasheed Baig while talking to Business Recorder also expressed his concern over the non-availability of water in canals. He said that already less rainfall had ruined the wheat crop in Barani areas and now longer canal closures was causing further damage to the crops in the province especially in the Southern part of the province.
