Senate Standing Committee on Sports and Youth Affairs in its meeting at the Parliament House directed the Ministry of Youth Affairs to take urgent steps to salvage National Volunteer Movement (NVM) programme. Taking serious exception to poor performance of the Ministry with regard to the National Volunteer Movement programme.
"The NVM has the potential to work miracles particularly in our rural areas and it must be utilised to achieve significant national objectives in-line with the examples of advanced countries in the world". While discussing the role and objectives of NVM, the meeting which was held under the chairmanship of Abdul Ghaffar Qureshi, observed that this vital initiative of the government can transform our youth by bringing them into the mainstream of national life and by harnessing their potential for constructive pursuits.
The Committee suggested that permanent legal status needs to be bestowed on the programme to make it a permanent body and to increase its efficacy and scope. It added that nearly 40 percent population of the country falls into the category of youth and we cannot afford to ignore their services and contribution towards national uplift and development.
The meeting expressed its disappointment over the fact that only one meeting of the programme has so far been convened during last five years. It directed the ministry to formulate recommendations for making the NVM more dynamic. It also directed the Ministry to provide details of the expenditure of various activities that have been carried out by NVM and that the our reach of the NVM should be expanded to involve the youth of remote and far off areas of the country and mobilise them for voluntary services.
Earlier, Federal Minister for Youth Affairs Shahid Hussain Bhutto informed the committee about the aims and objectives of NVM. He said that all out efforts are being made to bring about improvement in the working of the NVM. He also informed the committee about the budget and other plans of the NVM.
