The four-member UN Commission probing the assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday morning. During their stay, the Commission members will hold meetings in federal capital and Sindh province and would record statements with regard to inquiry into the assassination of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto.
This will be probably the last visit of the Commission and it will submit its report by the end of March. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had announced to constitute the UN probing commission on his visit to Pakistan in February 2009 with the mandate to submit its report identifying facts and circumstances concerning Bhutto's tragic death on December 27, 2007.
The Commission which started its work on July 1, 2009 was tasked to complete its report by December 31 ,2009, but later the duration has been extended and the new deadline for submitting report is March 31, 2010 on the request of the commission in the wake of poor law and order situation in Pakistan over the year.
Earlier its visits, the UN team had held meetings and conducted interviews with Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, Sindh Provincial Minister Agha Siraj Durrani, former IG Punjab Ahmed Naseem, former Additional IG Chaudhry Abdul Hamid and other important figures. The team members also met with former President Pervez Musharraf in London.
