The prices of chicken meat have register a big surge during last few days adding burden on general pubic budget who are already facing difficulties in making two ends meet in present income. The retailers of chicken meat are offering meat at Rs 240 to Rs 260 per kg in different areas of the city. A few weeks ago the prices ranged between Rs 140 and Rs 170 per kg.
The retailers hold poultry farmers responsible for short supply of chicken which has resulted in price hike. However, the poultry farmers hold skyrocketing price of poultry feed responsible for increase in chicken prices and ultimately chicken meat prices. The farmers claim that feed prices have registered around 82 percent increase in recent past.
Besides chicken meat, prices of beef have also increased from Rs 220 per kg to Rs 260 per kg boneless. Similarly, mutton is currently selling at Rs 320 per kg in different areas of the city while it was Rs 300 only a couple of days ago.
The consumers said that not a single vegetable is available in the market at less than Rs 40 per kg, except potato which is at Rs 20 per kg. "Daily use items of cooking like garlic price ranges in between Rs 200 and Rs 220 per kg. Now price of chicken meat prices also increase. We are in a dilemma how to feed our children and family."
